The Minister for Transport, Seamus Brennan has said he will make a decision in the coming weeks about whether or not to put LUAS on 'stilts' at the Red Cow Roundabout in Dublin.

However, he said it was more likely that the upgrading of the road network around the controversial intersection would be brought forward instead.

The Railway Procurement Agency which is responsible for LUAS said it did not expect trams to contribute to traffic congestion at the roundabout.

The Minister was speaking as the RPA began the first testing of LUAS trams along public roads in Dublin.

The trams were tested on a stretch of track between the Red Cow roundabout and the Square in Tallaght.

The Chief Executive of the RPA, Frank Allen said the tests marked a 'milestone' in the project's history.
