Sri Lanka PM to reopen parliament

watch

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has said he intends to reconvene the country's parliament, which was suspended by the President earlier this week.

The Prime Minister was speaking on his return from a visit to the United States, during which the President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, declared a state of emergency, suspended parliament and dismissed three ministers.

Mr Wickremesinghe said the President's actions had threatened the ceasefire with Tamil Tiger rebels.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga has now lifted the state of emergency she declared last Wednesday.

The Prime Minister said that with the parliament closed, there could be no progress towards peace.
