Officials in the Dept of Health and the Attorney General's office are continuing work on drafting amendments to the regulations banning smoking in the workplace.

The amendments mean hotel rooms, hospices, psychiatric hospitals and nursing homes will not be covered by the ban.

Prisons and outdoor workplaces have already been exempted.

Once the amendments are cleared, the European Commission must be notified, and it will be three months before the exemptions come into effect.
