At least six soldiers are reported to have been killed and two wounded when a US Black Hawk helicopter was forced to land near the Iraqi town of Tikrit.

The helicopter went down outside a US military base known as Ironhorse, formerly one of Saddam Hussein's palaces.

Earlier, one US soldier was killed and seven wounded in an attack on a convoy in Iraq.

A military spokesman said rocket propelled grenades were fired at the vehicles, which were travelling through the northern city of Mosul.

The attack came hours after a memorial service at an air base in the west of the country in which US-led forces mourned the 16 soldiers who died in a helicopter crash last Sunday.
