Mental health care lacking: report

Irish people with intellectual disabilities who also suffer from psychiatric illnesses are being denied essential mental health services, a new study has found.

The National Disability Authority review says that mental health services available to the general public are non existent for those with intellectual disability.

The NDA estimates that up to 8,000 Irish people with a learning disability also suffer mental health problems.

Over half of these are in need of specialist assessment and treatment which is not available.
