Martin rejects smoke ban compromise

watch

Health Minister Micheál Martin has said that publicans' proposals in relation to the ban on smoking in the workplace are not an acceptable compromise.

He was speaking at the launch of a new national campaign aimed at helping people to give up cigarettes.

The minister said that publicans have suggested that pubs with less than five members of staff be exempt from the legislation, and that larger pubs could have a 50% non-smoking area.

Mr Martin said there has been consultation with publicans and that he is willing to hold further discussions with them about the implementation of the new law.

He said international evidence does not justify fears of a downturn in trade.

Campaign launch

The campaign, entitled 'Every Cigarette is doing you Damage', was launched in Government Buildings this morning.

It is described as a 'first line support system' for smokers wishing to break the habit.

The quitline number is 1850 201203, and is operational from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week.

Callers can receive confidential advice on quitting, a free information pack and referral to local smoking cessation services. Calls will be charged at the local rate.
