The Tánaiste Mary Harney has told the Dáil that the Government will not allow 100 or 150 protesters to stop people from receiving the bin service for which they have paid.

She was responding to the Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins, who was speaking in the Dáil for the first time since his release from Mountjoy Prison last Saturday.

Deputy Higgins asked if the Government was prepared to see Mountjoy turned into a Fianna Fáil/PD Gulag for hundreds of working people.

Ms Harney said people had not been jailed for peaceful protest, but for defying a High Court order.
