Campaigners called off their pickets of bin depots last night, but did not rule out disrupting services again in the future. They also said the blockading of bin trucks in housing estates would continue.
A spokesman for South Dublin County Council said bin workers at its depot in Ballymount would not have their wages docked despite refusing to drive their trucks past protesters.
The council says it has a backlog of around 15,000 households who have not had their rubbish collected. It says it has four additional bin lorries on the road picking up the backlog and hopes to have it cleared by the weekend.
Dublin City Council says its workers will clear the backlog of uncollected rubbish in the evenings, after their regular collection shift ends, and it is advising householders to leave their bins out.
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council says its services have returned to normal. It says it will have trucks out on Saturday clearing the backlog of rubbish in 12,500 households in Blackrock, Booterstown and Mount Merrion. The rest will be collected next week.
Fingal County Council says its services have returned to normal. It says it has collected 70% of bins in the area and any backlog will be collected today.
