An O2 Ireland finance spokesman has said he totally rejects suggestions by consumer groups that Irish customers are being ripped-off.

The Chief Financial Officer of O2 Ireland has said he totally rejects suggestions by consumer groups that Irish customers are being ripped-off by mobile phone charges.

Niall Norton said the facts were available and he did not believe for a moment that customers were being overcharged.

Earlier, he told the Joint Committee on Communications that Irish customers were spending more on mobile phones because they used them more - and for longer lengths of time - than customers in the UK and Germany.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of Vodafone Ireland has said he can see mobile phone charges coming down in price by 10% a year.

Paul O'Donovan told the committee that mobile phone users in Ireland paid high prices because of high usage and not because of excessive charges by mobile operators.
