EU fisheries ministers meeting in Luxembourg have reached agreement on the so-called Irish Box, despite objections by both Ireland and Spain to the proposals.

Under a compromise arrangement proposed by the Italian presidency, a new special conservation zone, one third of the size of the old Irish Box, will be established off the southwest coast of Ireland.

Both Ireland and Spain voted against the proposal but were outvoted by the other states.

It is reported that Spain is threatening to take legal action over the Commission decision.

Earlier, Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Dermot Ahern, said that the compromise proposals put forward by the Italian Presidency do not meet Ireland's needs.

The Spanish government, however, was pressing for the complete removal of the Irish Box.
