Iarnród Éireann has said it is committed to reopening the Limerick-Waterford line following Tuesday's freight train derailment and bridge collapse at Cahir in Co Tipperary.

The company says the repair will take up to six months to complete, at a cost of at least €1.5m.

Spokesman Barry Kenny said an independent inquiry panel is to begin meeting next week, to analyse material from the scene.

It will be chaired by AEA Technology Rail of Derby, England, which is said to have decades of experience in rail accident investigation.

The team will also include Iarnród Éireann's specialists in mechanical engineering, infrastructure and operations.

Iarnród Éireann said that, while it hopes to confirm the preliminary conclusions into the cause of the accident as soon as possible, the full inquiry would take several weeks to complete.
