Call for action against perpetrators of violence
A man whose body was found on waste ground in Finglas in Dublin yesterday has been named as 27-year-old Patrick Sheridan from Ratoath Avenue in Finglas.
A post mortem examination carried out on the body showed that he was shot twice in the head with a handgun. Detectives believe he could have been dead for up to two days.
The latest victim of gangland violence in Finglas was missing for three days before he was found following a planned search on waste ground.
The post mortem carried out by Dr Marie Cassidy at the temporary city morgue in Marino last night showed he had been shot twice in the head with a handgun.
Detectives believe the local man was killed at the place he was found, known as The Trench, off Coachman's Lane.
Sixth gang related murder since January
This is the sixth feud or gang related murder in northwest Dublin in the past eight months. There have also been a number of shootings, including one on the same area of waste ground where the latest victim was found.
Gardaí say the victim was a mild mannered, non-violent man not thought to be involved in serious crime.
They have set up an incident room in Blanchardstown Garda Station and are appealing for people to contact them there. They also say they understand that people may be afraid to talk to them but that the only way they can fight this criminal activity is with the support of the community.
Calls for tougher Garda measures
This latest attack has prompted a call for tougher garda action against what have been described as a small number of criminals who are harassing people in the Finglas area.
Father Seamus Aherne, the parish priest of St Finian's in Finglas, said the tyranny of a few people must not be allowed to take over the community.
