The meeting, the first of its kind in over six years, was sought by the Bishops because the European Union is proposing the funding of embryo stem-cell research.

Next month, the Tánaiste Mary Harney will represent Ireland at a Council of Ministers meeting, where a final vote will be taken on whether or not to give €300,000 to stem-cell research.

A spokesman for the Bishops said the controversial compensation deal between 18 religious congregations and the last Government was not on the agenda so far.
