A Labour Party councillor has called on the chairman of the Western Health Board to resign over his support for the campaign against the smoking ban in pubs.

A Labour Party councillor on Galway city council has called on the chairman of the Western Health Board, Val Hanley, to resign over his support for the campaign against the smoking ban in pubs.

Tom Costello said Mr Hanley's stance was incompatible with his role as chairman of a health board.

He added that local Fianna Fáil TD Frank Fahey should also resign his position as Minister of State for labour affairs because of his support for the campaign against the ban.

Mr Fahey is due to oversee the enforcement of the ban from next January.
