Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness has said that the setting of a date for Assembly elections in the North is crucial if his party is to make any approach to the IRA during sensitive peace-process negotiations.

He was speaking after a meeting in London between the Sinn Féin leadership and the Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble.

The meeting was the fifth in a series between the Sinn Féin President, Gerry Adams, and Mr Trimble, as part of continuing efforts to revive the Assembly.
