Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness has said he is optimistic about the likelihood of resolving the current impasse in the North's peace process.

Speaking on RTÉ's This Week radio programme, Mr McGuinness said that he had been encouraged by the Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble's decision to 'face down' rebel party members.

On David Trimble's call for an IRA statement that the war is over, he said that Mr Trimble was looking for something outside the terms of reference of the De Chastelain decommissioning body.

But he added that everyone had a part to play in reviving the process, including the IRA.
