Israeli soldiers have killed a leading member of Islamic Jihad and four other Palestinians in raids in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

Diab Shyoukhi, who died in a shoot out near Hebron, was the organisation's leader for the southern West Bank.

The killings have led to vows of revenge from Islamic Jihad.

Another Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli troops near the Jewish settlement of Morag in the southern Gaza Strip.

Earlier, an Israeli soldier died of wounds sustained before dawn in an incursion into a Palestinian refugee camp in Gaza.

The dead soldier was 22-year-old Sergeant Avihu Keinan, who took part in a raid on the al-Bureij camp in the central Gaza Strip.

The gunbattle left two Palestinians dead, wounded another five soldiers and caused a three-year-old Palestinian girl to die of fright.
