Families living in the area of north Mayo, which was seriously damaged by a series of weekend landslides, are on a fresh alert tonight.

Geological experts say large amounts of peat and subsoil are beginning to move down the mountainside which overlooks several villages in the area.

Mayo County Council has closed a 3km section of the main road around Dooncarton Head.

Work on a clean-up of the local cemetery, which was seriously damaged in the landslide last Friday, has also been suspended.

A team of up to 50 people has been trying to remove thousands of tons of mud and debris from the badly-damaged graveyard.
