A poll in today's Irish Independent show the Government's popularity has suffered a huge fall.

The coalition's popularity is now at 25%, which the Independent says is the lowest satisfaction rating of any government in a decade.

Support for the Government has fallen 8% since March.

The Taoiseach's personal rating is also dropping; it stands at 37% - the worst performance for a Taoiseach since Albert Reynolds 11 years ago.

Support for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is down, while Labour and Sinn Féin have increased their share.

The PDs and the Greens remain the same.

Today on RTE's Saturday View, Junior Fianna Fáil Minister, Willie O'Dea, said the government was going through a bad patch and that the poll result caused him 'disquiet'.

However, he said coming after months of bad news with the deteriorating world economy, the poll result demonstrated that the Fianna Fáil core vote was resiliant.

He said the alternative combination of Fine Gael, Labour and the Greens was roughly at the same level of support as the government.

The Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny said his party had to keep working to convince the electorate if offered a credibile alternative.

The Labour leader, Pat Rabbitte, whose party's support rose by the same amount to 15 points, says the outcome reflects a backlash against a government which - he claimed - bought the last election.
