WTO hears proposals on farm subsidies

At the World Trade Organisation talks in Cancun, Mexican officials have put forward a set of proposals for resolving the farm subsidies issue.

One hundred and forty six countries are trying to agree a multilateral trade deal at the talks, which end tomorrow.

The carefully worded draft suggests the phasing out of farming subsidies in return for the opening up of agricultural markets in developing countries.
