National Car testing is set to become more stringent from next Monday.
Failure rates are expected to increase as offences previously deemed minor, such as misaligned headlights, will now lead to a car failing.
The driving test is also set for an overhaul from January next with drivers being required to be able to open the bonnet of the car and answer questions about changing the oil and water.
