Rescue services in Co Kerry have called off their search for a light aircraft.

Rescue services in Co Kerry have called off their search for a light aircraft.

They began a search this evening on the Dingle Peninsula after receiving unconfirmed reports that a plane may have crashed in the area.

Two eyewitnesses reported seeing a small plane get into difficulty north of the village of Lispole.

The Shannon coastguard helicopter flew over the area between Lispole and the nearby Connor Pass but did not find any sign of a crash.

The helicopter has now returned to Shannon.

The Irish Aviation Authority says there were no reports of a distress call from any aircraft in the area.

Rescue workers believe that the witnesses saw something in the sky, but at this stage they do not believe it was a plane.
