The man who was injured in a shooting incident at his home in Kilrush in Co Clare last night was 46-year-old Anthony Kelly.
He is known to Gardaí and has been successfully pursued by the Criminal Assets Bureau in the past and ordered to pay ¤1m.
A number of television cameramen who went to Kilrush to cover the story say they were threatened by some men in the town.
Gardaí say they are treating the threats seriously and a man is being interviewed.
Mr Kelly is in a stable condition in hospital in Limerick recovering from gunshot wounds to the arm and chest.
He was making a cup of tea at his home at around 11.10pm last night when a number of shots were fired through a kitchen window.
Gardaí have not ruled out the possibility that the incident may be connected to feuds between rival criminal gangs based in Limerick city.
