A new governor has taken up his post in Kandahar in Afghanistan as President Hamid Karzai tries to extend his authority over the country's provinces.

In a quiet ceremony, the outgoing governor handed power to his successor, Mohammad Yusuf Pushtun.

There had been some concern since the change of governor was announced that he might try to hold onto power.

Previous attempts by President Karzai to appoint new governors failed when those dismissed refused to step down.
