South African President Thabo Mbeki has said he expects to fly to Monrovia on Monday to attend a ceremony marking the handover of power by Liberian President Charles Taylor.
Mr Mbeki told a business forum in Johannesburg he had been asked to make the trip by Ghanaian President John Kufuor, current chairman of the West African economic bloc ECOWAS.
He said both Kufuor and Taylor had assured him in separate telephone conversations that Taylor would hand over power to his vice-president, Moses Blah, on Monday and fly into exile the same day or the day after.
