A spokesman for rebel forces in Liberia has said they will fight till the last man drops if President Charles Taylor does not leave the country next week as promised.

The comments follow indications from the President that he might not leave immediately after stepping down on Monday.

The rebels have said they will only withdraw from the port area of the capital, Monrovia, if President Taylor goes into exile, and west African peace keepers are deployed fully.

West African peacekeepers have been streaming into the Liberian capital, Monrovia, to try to halt the fighting between government troops and rebels in which hundreds of civilians have been killed.

The United Nations has begun talks with a number of countries that are offering to send peacekeeping troops to Liberia.

Diplomats say troops from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa, as well as a number of West African countries, are expected to take part in the mission.

A UN force is due to replace a mainly Nigerian contingent of peacekeepers by 1 October.

The first Nigerian troops arrived in the country yesterday.

However, they are not expected to venture into the capital, Monrovia, until a full force of more than 3,000 men is in place.
