Farmers urged to capitalise on deal

Updated: 22:57, Thursday, 24 July 2003

The EU Agriculture Commissioner, Franz Fischler, told Irish farmers tonight to capitalise on the CAP reform deal reached last month.

Speaking in Goffs, Co Kildare, the commissioner said consumers and taxpayers would benefit from better value, quality and food safety.

He said he would not accept that cuts in dairy subsidies would lead to 10,000 Irish dairy farmers being forced out of the business.

He also insisted that full decoupling rather than partial decoupling of beef subsidies would benefit farmers more.
