Liberia ceasefire appears collapsed

Updated: 20:42, Saturday, 19 July 2003

The one-month-old ceasefire between Liberian troops and rebel fighters appears to have collapsed.

Renewed fighting reached a strategic bridge in the capital, Monrovia, today, and the rebels are reported to have pushed across the bridge and taken control of the port area.

Thousands of people have fled to the centre of the city and living conditions there are deteriorating.

The United States has expressed alarm at the renewed fighting but has given no sign that it is ready to commit troops to international peacekeeping missions in the country.
