Call for Blair to set NI elections date

Updated: 21:40, Friday, 18 July 2003

Fifteen US congressman have called on British Prime Minister Tony Blair to set a date for elections in Northern Ireland soon as possible.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the 11 Democrats and four Republicans say the postponement of the elections earlier this year denied the public their fundamental right to vote and sent a negative message to a society hoping to become exclusively democratic.

The congressmen made the call as Mr Blair concluded an official visit to the United States.
