Responding to news that German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder had cancelled his holidays in Italy because of anti-German remarks, the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, said he was 'sorry for him'.

The Italian junior minister responsible for tourism, Stefano Stefani, has refused to apologise for describing Germans as 'hyper-nationalistic blondes' who invade Italian beaches.

Two senior German ministers have called for Mr Stafani to resign over his remarks.

The row started last week in a European Parliament outburst by Silvio Berlusconi, who compared a German MEP to a Nazi prison guard.
