US President, George W Bush, has called on the President of Liberia, Charles Taylor, to step down in order, as he put it, to spare the country further bloodshed.

Forces loyal to Mr Taylor and rebels have been fighting for control of the capital, Monrovia.

Mr Taylor has been accused of supporting rebels in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

Many countries, including Britain, believe the US should dispatch troops to Liberia, which was founded in the 19th century by freed American slaves.
