The US Justice Department says a lorry driver from Ohio has pleaded guilty to plotting an al-Qaeda terrorist attack aimed at destroying a bridge in New York.

The man, 34-year-old Iyman Faris, has admitted providing material support to terrorists.

The Attorney General, John Ashcroft, told reporters that Faris had admitted his guilt as part of a plea deal in which he agreed to co-operate with prosecutors.

It is believed he was receiving instructions directly from a senior al-Qaeda official. Mr Ashcroft said the case was typical of al-Qaeda operations in the United States.
