Murphy denies split over NI elections

Updated: 17:06, Wednesday, 18 June 2003

The Northern Secretary, Paul Murphy, denied this afternoon that there was a split between the British and Irish governments on the holding of elections in the North.

Speaking after a 1.5-hour meeting with Brian Cowen in Dublin, Mr Murphy said British government legislation was aimed towards elections in the autumn.

Earlier in the Dáil, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said it would be a 'desperate mistake' not to go ahead with elections in the autumn.
