14 killed in Chinese mine accident

Updated: 14:58, Monday, 16 June 2003

Fourteen Chinese coal miners were killed when a runaway tramcar crashed 300 metres underground.

A steel rope controlling the descent down a 25 degree slope came free from the tramcar in the Jianghu coal mine in southern Guangdong province.

China's mining industry is the world's biggest and deadliest. Around 7,000 people were killed in mine accidents last year.

Twelve miners were injured in Saturday night's accident and three are fighting for their lives in hospital.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
