Updated: 15:56, Monday, 16 June 2003

The man accused of being the leader of the operation to bomb two nightclubs in the Indonesian island of Bali last October has gone on trial.

43-year-old Mukhlas is the third key suspect to go before the courts charged with terrorism offences in connection with the attack. He is the elder brother of Amrozi, the first man to go on trial for the attacks.

More than 200 people, most of whom were foreign tourists, were killed in the Bali bombings.

At Amrozi's trial today, Australian survivors of the bombings gave harrowing accounts of the nightclub bombs. One witness said he blacked out for several minutes after the blast at the Sari Club, in which three of his friends died.

Amrozi's trial has been adjourned until 30 June.
