Fierce fighting breaks out in Congo

Updated: 22:13, Saturday, 7 June 2003

Heavy fighting between rival tribal militias broke out in the Democratic Republic of Congo town of Bunia in the northeastern region of Ituri.

At least 16 people including seven civilians were wounded in the clashes despite the arrival of a French-led rapid response force that is licenced to kill in order to keep the peace.

Some 50,000 civilians in Ituri have been killed and some half million people displaced since 1999.
