Gardaí say more than 100 people were arrested in overnight raids on a number of lapdancing clubs in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dundalk.Gardaí say Operation Quest, targetting lapdancing clubs believed to be employing illegal immigrants, has been underway for a couple of months.

Last night they raided and searched premises around the country. Staff were questioned about visa documentation and over 100 people were arrested.

In all, 10 clubs in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Dundalk and Galway, were searched and quantities of drugs, cash and a firearm were seized.

Gardaí say a number of people have been charged under the Alien's Order, others have had their Alien's Registration status withdrawn while some will have their status reviewed.

Ten were charged with offences under the Aliens Act, 71 persons were found to be working illegally in breach of the Employment Permits Act, 2003.22 cases are still being investigated and man was charged with a drugs related offence.

Meanwhile, an organisation which helps women involved in prostitution has called on the government to close down all lap-dancing clubs, some of which they believe, are brothels in all but name.

The Ruhama Women's Project has welcomed the garda raids and say any development that protects women from abuse should be welcomed.

It is now thought that least five clubs in Dublin were raided, including one well-known premises trading under the name 'Angels'. It is understood that a number of workers at the clubs were helping gardaí with their inquiries.

In Cork, a large number of gardaí raided 'The Great Escape' club on Leitrim Street and 11 women were questioned. Files are expected to be completed for the Director of Public Prosecution.

Ten women were arrested in a Limerick lapdancing club. One of the women - in her 30s - has been charged under the Aliens Act and is due in Limerick District Court this morning.

Two women arrested in similar circumstances in Dundalk were also charged with immigration offences.

All others arrested have since been released.
