An advance party of French peacekeeping troops has arrived in a town in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where hundreds of civilians have been massacred in inter-ethnic fighting in the past month.

The soldiers are spearheading a rapid reaction force being deployed around the town of Bunia under a special mandate from the United Nations.

UN officials say 50,000 people have been killed in the area since 1999 by tribal militias, and many women and girls have been raped.

The UN children's fund, Unicef, says the international community needs to contribute much more to the region.
