The Taoiseach has dismissed a newspaper report that the Government is considering closing down or curtailing the Tribunals of Inquiry currently underway because of rising costs.

Speaking in St Petersburg in Russia, where he is attending the city's 300th anniversary celebrations, Mr Ahern told RTÉ News that there was no truth in the report.

He said that the Government had already announced plans for a new method of investigating matters of public importance.

Details will be contained in the Commission of Investigation Bill due to be published this year.
