A 40-year-old man has been before a court in Belfast charged with the murder 14 years ago of the Belfast solicitor, Pat Finucane.

Kenneth Barrett was also charged with attempted murder, theft and membership of an illegal Loyalist paramilitary organisation.

He denied all the charges.

In a written statement, Barrett claimed he was being made a scapegoat and was the subject of State victimisation.

Earlier, the deputy director of the Stevens Inquiry told the court that the new evidence against Barrett had been gathered during two separate covert surveillance operations over the past 18 months, while he was living in England.

Barrett was remanded in custody. His solicitor said he would be applying for High Court bail next week.
