Australia's Governor-General Peter Hollingworth has resigned his post as Queen Elizabeth's representative in the country.

Earlier this month, an Anglican church inquiry found he failed to act against paedophile priests when he was archbishop of Brisbane in the 1990s.In a separate controversy, two days ago a court dismissed rape allegations against Hollingworth dating back to the 1960s.

However, the ruling failed to quell demands for his departure.
