President criticises lack of women in politics

President Mary McAleese has criticised the continuing absence of women from politics here in significant and truly representative numbers.

She told an international women's conference in Dublin that this kept one foot on the brake as new opportunities were opening up to Irish women.

However, she also said she was encouraged by what she called the crucial involvement of women in the Northern Peace Process.
