Gardaí believe an organised criminal gang was responsible for the theft of 12 shotguns from the home of a firearms dealer just outside Balbriggan in the early hours of this morning.
The 55-year-old arms dealer, his wife and his son were tied up while the four-man armed and masked gang ransacked their home.
The family managed to free themselves and alert the gardaí.
As well as the shotguns, the gang also got away with jewellery and around ¤4,000 in cash. They made their escape in the family's black Isuzu jeep.
The gardaí are now searching for the jeep, which has the registration number 03 D 36627.
They have also asked anybody who saw anything suspicious near the house at Coney Hill, or along the old Dublin to Belfast road between 1am and 4am this morning, to contact them.
