Bali bombing Amrozi trial opens
More than 200 people, most of them foreign tourists, died in the explosions at a bar and a nightclub seven months ago.
The defendant, known only as Amrozi, is charged with four counts of terrorism under legislation passed in the wake of the attacks.
Armoured police vehicles swepted Amrozi into the court compound. Two police officers led him to his seat in front of a panel of five judges.
A 40-year-old mechanic from an impoverished village in East Java, Anrozi's ready smile has earned him the nickname 'the laughing bomber'. Today in court he was more sombre.
The indictment against him detailed the meticulous planning that went into the Bali operation, and the key role he allegedly played.
If found guilty, Amrozi could face the death penalty. Amrozi's lawyers say the indictment fails to show their client took part in the planning of the bombings.
His trial was adjourned for a week. Twenty-eight other people have been arrested in connection with the bombings.
