Warning over Chernobyl protective shield

Nuclear experts have said that the protective shield covering the Chernobyl plant is in danger of collapse.

The warning comes on the 17th anniversary of the leak at the plant which was the world's worst nuclear accident.

Construction of a new casing costing more than ¤720million is due to begin later this year and last four to five years.

The nuclear power plant was shut down two and a half years ago in exchange for a ¤2billion aid package from the world's richest nations.

Russia's Atomic Energy Minister, Alexander Rumyantsev, said that unless the casing was replaced there would be another radiation leak.
