Govt. considers NI election delay

Updated: 20:01, Friday, 25 April 2003

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowan, said today that the question of postponement of the Northern Ireland elections would have to be considered very seriously before any decision was made.

But, he said, people in Northern Ireland should get the opportunity to make their decision now in terms of those pro-agreement parties who have taken the risks and were entitled to the electoral rewards.

Mr Cowan added that the Irish Government's postition is that the date for the election is fixed and the elections should go ahead.
