Three men have made statements to gardaí in Dublin about an assault on a cyclist in the City Centre early on Sunday morning.

It is understood the men went to Pearse Street Garda Station voluntarily yesterday.

35-year-old Barry Duggan was attacked after he apparently bumped into a group of young men as he pushed his bike along Grafton Street at about 2am on Sunday.

Closed Circuit television cameras from premises on the street appear to show Mr Duggan being pulled to the ground and dragged down a nearby lane known as Lemon Street.

Mr Duggan was repeatedly kicked and beaten by his assailants and was found unconscious by two gardaí responding to an emergency call.

Mr Duggan, a librarian originally from Drumcliffe in County Sligo but living in the Rathmines area of the city, remains in a critical condition in St James's Hospital.

According to newspaper reports, the three men - two brothers from Stillorgan, South Dublin, and a third from Swords in North Dublin - were all questioned in the presence of their solicitors yesterday.

A garda spokesman confirmed that officers were studying CCTV footage from a number of premises and said a file would be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
