US President George W Bush and the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, have been meeting at Hillsborough Castle in Co Down for what has been described as a summit on the war in Iraq.

Mr Bush was accompanied by his Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and by Richard Haass, his special envoy on Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, riot police have prevented 2,000 anti-war demonstrators from reaching Hillsborough village where the summit is taking place.

Tomorrow, both leaders will be joined by the Taoiseach and leaders of the pro-Agreement parties for talks on the peace process in the North.

Mr Ahern said earlier that it was the most important week for the peace process since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement this time five years ago.
