Decision delayed on Mayo gas terminal

Updated: 17:02, Monday, 7 April 2003

An Bord Pleanála has told RTÉ News that a decision on a planning application for the construction of a controversial natural gas terminal in North Mayo will not now be announced until Wednesday, 30 April.

The decision had been expected tomorrow.

Enterprise Energy Ireland wants to build the €125 million terminal at Bellanaboy, near Belmullet, to bring ashore gas from the newly discovered Corrib Field located 70 kilometres off the Mayo coast.

Local environmentalists, residents, farming and fishing organisations have lodged objections to the siting of the terminal.

Their objections were heard at a three-week long hearing in Ballina last November.
