The Flood Tribunal has heard former FG Senator and TD, Liam Cosgrave, failed to disclose a £2,500 payment from Frank Dunlop

The Flood Tribunal has heard former Fine Gael Senator and TD, Liam Cosgrave, failed to disclose a £2,500 payment from Frank Dunlop to the Public Offices Commission in 1998.

Cllr Cosgrave told the Tribunal that he forgot about the payment from Mr Dunlop, when he made his declaration six months after receiving it. He admitted he has still not corrected the record.

He was reminded by counsel for the Tribunal, John Gallagher, that he could face prison for making a false declaration to the Commission.

Under the Electoral Act of 1997, all election donations over £500 must be declared.

Cllr Cosgrave said he had lodged £500 of the £2,500 and when he checked his bank records to prepare his 1998 report, he forgot about the £2,000 he had taken in cash.

Liam Cosgrave now admits getting almost £6,000 in political donations from Frank Dunlop throughout the '90s.

Cosgrave says he is co-operating

Cllr Cosgrave said earlier today he believes he has fully co-operated with the Flood Tribunal.

On his second day in the witness box, he was reminded that a witness summons was issued against him to compel him to give evidence.

The councillor said it was his legal right to decide how much detail he gave the Tribunal in statements. He also said he had earlier given voluntary interviews to the Tribunal.

Cllr Cosgrave was also questioned further about his finances.

He told the Tribunal his hobby was horse racing and that he often had large wins of which he did not keep a record.

Mr Cosgrave said he may also have taken cash payments for work as a solicitor and if revenue issues arose from that he would have to deal with it.

He added that his lack of records did not indicate anything underhand.
